They will flash moments before they return to either the Scatter or Chase mode. The ghosts turn dark blue and wander around in the maze being vulnerable. There are four energizers located in the maze and all four ghosts change mode.

The “Frightened” mode occurs when Pac-Man eats an energizer within the maze. This mode lasts only for a few seconds and then changes back to the “Chase” mode. Inky the cyan ghost moves towards the bottom left corner and Clyde the orange ghost moves towards the bottom left corner. Blinky the red ghost moves towards the top right corner, while Pink the pink ghost moves towards the top left corner. In “Scatter” mode, the ghosts will stop chasing Pac-Man and each will move into its respective corners for a few seconds. Clyde the orange ghost is moving in a random fashion and seems to stay out of the way of Pac-Man. Inky the cyan ghost will patrol an area and is not very predictable in this mode. Pinky the pink ghost will attempt to ambush Pac-Man by trying to get in front of him and cut him off. Blinky the red ghost is very aggressive in its approach while chasing Pac-Man and will follow Pac-Man once located. Each of the four ghosts has a unique behaviour while chasing Pac-Man. In “Chase” mode, the ghosts are trying to find and capture Pac-Man.

This article discusses the different movements and behaviour of the ghosts in Pac-Man and how it relates to implementing Reusable Object-Oriented software also known as Design Patterns. The ghosts change mode during game play from scattering to the corners of the maze, to chasing Pac-Man and also to being frightened when Pac-Man picks up a Power-Pellet. The four ghosts, Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, each has different behaviour depending on the mode of the ghosts. Pac-Man is being chased by four ghosts in the game whose main objective is to kill him. The player navigates Pac-Man through a maze and has to collect all the dots (Pac-Dots) in order to complete the stage. Pac-Man is an arcade game that was first release in 1980. We will also look at how the Strategy Pattern can help with the design of the different movement behaviours.

The first article in the “Pac-Man Patterns” series will focus on the different behaviour each of the four ghosts have during the different modes of the game. I then decided to create a series of articles which illustrate the use of Design Patterns to implement some of the complex design issues in the game Pac-Man. I was really amazed at the complexity in the design and AI of a game that seems so simple while playing at the time.

His article was about the design and AI lessons within the classic Namco game Pac-Man. Thanks again to for putting in the work. The idea of using Pac-Man to illustrate the usage of Design Patterns came to me while I was reading an article about Pac-Man by Jamey Pittman. Never fear though, as the pesky glitch is still chasing you down from behind.

  • Inky (light blue ghost) – This one’s a little trickier, as it requires you to play as Pac-Man and eat at least 50 power pellets - cumulatively, not in one run, though if you can pull it off in one go, you have my admiration! Then you simply get killed by Inky to unlock him.Īs you can see in the image above, playing with the ghosts is more like playing with Pac-Chicken, in the sense that the world is given the Pac-Man visuals but you score points by hopping forward, not by eating pellets.
  • Easy enough, though it doesn’t appear all that often.

Look for the cherry from numerous Pac-Man games and hop on it.

Pinky (pink ghost) – Once again, you need to be playing as Pac-Chicken.Simply hop in front of him and get run over and voila, you’ve unlocked Blinky. While playing with Pac-Chicken, the ambulance is reskinned as Pac-Man. Blinky (red ghost) – You’ll need Pac-Chicken for this one.We were able to unlock Clyde with a 199, and reports earning him with a 99. How good a score? We originally thought it might be 256, but it’s much less than that. Clyde (orange ghost) – He’s the easiest of the four to get, as all he requires is a good score using Pac-Man to unlock - and don’t forget that in that mode, you get points only for eating pellets and blue ghosts, not for simply moving forward. Thanks to the time and effort of Twitter user we’ve got some answers for you. Still, once you’ve seen that the four famous ghosts are also in the game but unavailable from the prize machine, it leads to an obvious question: how do you add those ghosts to your Crossy Road collection anyway? Since Hipster Whale put Pac-Man into Crossy Road as a way to cross-promote Pac-Man 256, we’ve had a lot of fun hopping around the neon-colored world and eating pellets.
